P2098 Post-catalyst fuel trim system too lean (bank 2)

What P2098 means

The engine control unit uses the oxygen sensor after the catalytic converter on bank 2 to fine-tune the mixture. That sensor keeps reporting a lean exhaust and the correction has reached its limit.

P2098 is a generic SAE J2012 code: it means the same on every make. The exact cause still depends on the car, so read the freeze-frame data before replacing parts.

Symptoms

Common causes

  1. Exhaust leak ahead of the bank 2 downstream sensor
  2. Vacuum leak in the intake
  3. Faulty bank 2 downstream or upstream oxygen sensor
  4. Low fuel pressure from a weak pump or blocked filter
  5. Faulty or dirty mass air flow sensor

Can I keep driving with P2098?

Get it checked within a few days. A lean mixture can cause misfires and engine damage under load.

What to check first

  1. Inspect the bank 2 exhaust for leaks near the sensors and manifold
  2. Check for vacuum leaks in the intake
  3. Compare oxygen sensor readings and fuel trims in live data
  4. Check fuel pressure and the air flow sensor, then replace the faulty part
