P2687 Fuel supply heater control circuit/open
What P2687 means
Diesel cars often have a fuel heater, usually in the fuel filter housing, to stop the fuel waxing in cold weather. P2687 means the engine computer found an open circuit in the heater control. In cold weather the fuel can thicken, causing poor starting or power loss.
P2687 is a generic SAE J2012 code: it means the same on every make. The exact cause still depends on the car, so read the freeze-frame data before replacing parts.

Symptoms
- Check engine light on
- Hard starting in cold weather
- Power loss or stalling in freezing temperatures
- No symptoms in warm weather
Common causes
- Failed fuel heater element
- Failed heater relay or fuse
- Broken wiring or corroded connector at the filter housing
- Fuel filter housing damaged
- Engine computer driver fault (rare)
Can I keep driving with P2687?
You can drive, but have it repaired within one or two weeks, before cold weather. Use winter-grade diesel in freezing temperatures.
What to check first
- Check the fuel heater fuse and relay
- Inspect the connector at the fuel filter housing
- Measure the heater element resistance
- Replace the heater or filter housing if the element is open
