P0111 Intake air temperature sensor 1 range/performance (bank 1)

What P0111 means

The intake air temperature sensor is sending a signal, but it is not believable: for example it does not match the coolant temperature after the car has stood overnight, or it does not change as the engine warms up. The computer may fall back to a default value.

P0111 is a generic SAE J2012 code: it means the same on every make. The exact cause still depends on the car, so read the freeze-frame data before replacing parts.

Symptoms

Common causes

  1. Drifting or slow-reacting IAT sensor
  2. High resistance in the connector or wiring
  3. Sensor dislodged from its mounting in the intake duct
  4. Faulty MAF sensor with integrated IAT
  5. Moisture in the connector

Can I keep driving with P0111?

You can keep driving. Have it looked at within one to two weeks; the effect on the engine is usually small.

What to check first

  1. After the car has stood cold for several hours, compare the IAT reading with the coolant temperature and outside air; they should be similar.
  2. Check the sensor is correctly seated in the intake and the connector is dry and tight.
  3. Measure sensor resistance at a known temperature and compare with the specification.
  4. Replace the sensor or MAF assembly if it is out of specification.
